Third Places
Everyone should have somewhere to go besides home and work. Parks, cafés, trails, halls, and rooms that actually welcome you.
Sociologists call them third places. The spots that are not home and not work, where you run into people without planning it. Coffee shops, parks, the library, trailheads, church halls, breweries, a quilting circle. Towns with plenty of them are more connected, and they hold up better when things get hard.
Sisters has real strengths here. A walkable downtown, festivals people love, an active arts scene. But these places are fragile. They disappear quietly when rent goes up, when a space closes for the winter, or when new folks never find their way in.
We want to figure out what a full network of gathering places for Sisters would look like. Indoor and outdoor, summer and winter, free and paid, for teenagers and for seniors. It starts with an honest list of what we have today and where the gaps are.
